Get something ever so slightly wrong and people will tell you. The internet will let you know. But good game design comes down to one simple thing: an idea. A single sentence. A physicist triggers an alien invasion. A gun is created that allows instantaneous travel between two places. A young man who can control time must rescue a princess. Everything can be expanded from this point onwards, but it's important to always come back to that original point. Adding assets to your scene. There's little difference between the content of the two, apart from the fact that authoring tools are specifically set up for one game and its intricacies. For example, Portal's tool includes the ability to render those ubiquitous wormholes, which is pretty crucial to the game. SDKs also include all the information you'll need to get started. You'll find a test level for you to play around with – and probably completely screw up. There are models and objects to interact with. Some include documentation, but you'll find a mass of tutorials and walkthroughs on modding sites like www. It's worth noting that you need to have the game you want to mod installed on your PC. The SDK will give you access to literally every single little bit of the game, from the colour of characters' pupils to entire swathes of land – but it needs to have something to work with in the first place. Remember, too, that games use different engines – Half- Life 2, Left 4 Dead and Portal use Valve's bespoke Source engine, whereas The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Fallout 3 and New Vegas use the Gamebryo engine. Before you even start getting to grips with modding, it's a good idea to just, y'know, play some games. Try to look at them as analytically as possible, try and work out what looks right for the setting and what feels forced and unnatural. There are also games that can teach you a little about the basics of game design through playing them. Minecraft lets you create worlds using building blocks, which has parallels with level designers blocking out levels with Lego. Garry's Mod serves as a great introduction to facial animations, models and physics, and lets you see how characters and objects interact – often hilariously. Levelling up. Any game, at its most basic, consists of a level. This is the desolate landscape on which all the other elements sit – a blank canvas that's inhabited by your characters. The undulations of a landscape or the sharp angles of an abandoned high- rise give visual cues as to the kind of environment we're inhabiting. Smart level design – like that of Bio. Shock – uses the environment to tell a story. Remove the characters and objects from Rapture and you'll still have a pretty good idea as to what's happened there. Of course, a level doesn't have to be set underwater, but it should try to tell part of a bigger story. While level editing is a complicated blend of art, maths and psychology, it's also a great way to introduce the basics of game design. The majority of elements in a game are made up of triangles wrapped around a wireframe mesh, and this angular approach is why you'll never come across a perfectly round pipe or barrel in a game. The environment of the game is created this way, too, and even the most awe- inspiring vistas of Skyrim are fundamentally made up of millions of tiny interconnected triangles. The best way to take those first tender steps into level design isn't through an SDK, though. It's through one of the most powerful and easy- to- use 3. D programs in recent years – Google's Sketch. Up. Sketch. Up has been used to create everything from models of real- life locales in Google Maps to photo- real models of aeroplanes. Although at heart, Sketch. Up wasn't really built with level editing in mind, its interface is very similar to that used in level- editing software, and its intuitive nature makes it the ideal starting point for any kind of 3. With a consolidation in the number of Exchange Server roles in Microsoft’s newest version of Exchange there are less decisions to make, and the way that traffic affinity is handled within Exchange makes it very simple to reliably load balance traffic. If you are migrating from a previous version, then things have changed considerably. In Exchange 2. 01. Not only did web- based traffic require load balancing, but MAPI traffic required load balancing too, when using a Client Access Array. To make matters more complex, affinity between servers was required for most protocols. Setting up, configuring and maintaining load balancing for Exchange 2. SSL offload. In Exchange 2. Client Access and Mailbox roles. Exchange 2. 01. 6 simplifies things further and has a single role – the Mailbox role. The single role server provides all the functionality Exchange 2. Exchange mailbox server and route to the server currently hosting the active mailbox being accessed. This means in Exchange 2. You can complicate it, but should you wish to make Load Balancing very simple you can do so. In this article we’ll look at how Load Balancing works in Exchange 2. Changes to how clients access Exchange 2. One of the biggest changes to Exchange 2. In Exchange 2. 01. Client Access, Hub Transport, Mailbox and Unified Messaging Roles can be deployed together, or apart. In Exchange 2. 01. Client Access role and Mailbox role. Exchange 2. 01. 6 consolidates these roles further to just the Mailbox role. Inside a Mailbox server, the Client Access proxy components introduced in Exchange 2. Client Access, Transport, Mailbox and Unified Messaging components. However, a Mailbox server always contains these multiple roles and cannot be split. Effectively, Microsoft are mandating multi- role servers for new deployments. In Exchange 2. 01. Client Access role did something very special. It ensured that when a user attempted to access their mailbox, the request was proxied back to the Mailbox server actively serving the users mailbox. This always ensured that services like Outlook on the Web were always rendered for the user on the mailbox server itself, removing the need for affinity. The Exchange 2. 01. The mailbox server hosting the active copy of the mailbox will serve the user accessing it, even if the user connects to another mailbox server. Finally all client traffic from native Exchange clients like Outlook connect over HTTP/HTTPS. No client connectivity directly via MAPI is allowed. Improvements to Load Balancing. These make load balancing for Exchange 2. HTTPS- only access from clients means that we've only got one protocol to consider, and HTTP is a great choice because it's failure states are well known, and clients typically respond in a uniform way. The second improvement is to the way that affinity now works. As Outlook on the web is rendered on the same server that's hosting that user's mailbox database it doesn’t matter which mailbox server the load balancer directs traffic to. These have no notable performance impact if the load balancer directs traffic to another server because the OWA session is already running. The challenge for session affinity when using forms- based authentication has also been solved. Previously it was essential to use affinity to avoid re- prompting for login when the load balancer redirected traffic to another server. This was solved in Exchange 2. HTTP cookies are handled by Exchange. The authentication cookie is provided to use the user after logon, encrypted using the Client Access Server's SSL certificate. This enables a logged in user to resume that session on a different Client Access server without re- authentication; assuming servers share the same SSL certificate, and therefore are able to decrypt the authentication cookie the client presents. Figure 1: Example request for a client accessing Exchange 2. The new simplified infrastructure provides us the opportunity to make load balancing as simple as it possibly can – if desired, we can use DNS round robin, a technique that simply provides the client with the IP address of every mailbox server, and let the HTTP client do the rest. If one Exchange server fails completely, then the protocol is smart enough to attempt connection to another server. There are a number of downsides to DNS round robin. It is not actually load balancing the traffic and there are no guarantees that each server will receive its fair share. It also has no service level monitoring, meaning that if a single service is failed, for example Outlook on the web, clients will simply see the error page rather than be automatically directed to another server. Finally it requires more external IP addresses when publishing externally, as each individual Exchange server will require an external IP address. These reasons typically mean that a load balancer is very desirable when publishing Exchange 2. We will want a load balancer to monitor each Exchange client facing service and if a failure does occur, direct traffic to another server and take that service offline. We will also want the load balancer to perform some level of distribution of load to ensure that one particular mailbox server is not proxying the majority of client access. When load balancing services using a load balancer we can utilize either Layer 4 or Layer 7 load balancing. Layer 4 load balancers do not look at the contents of the traffic and simply send the traffic onto the configured destination. Layer 7 load balancers have the ability to inspect the content of the traffic and direct accordingly. A layer 4 load balancer requires less resources to perform well, but has a trade- off. When using a single IP address, it can only monitor a single service (such as Outlook on the web, Active. Sync, MAPI- HTTP etc) meaning that although the configuration is very simple, there is a risk one service may fail and although the server is available, clients may still connect to the failed service. This typically means that a resilient Layer 4 implementation requires multiple IP addresses configured along with separate HTTP names configured per service (such as owa. This allows service level monitoring information to be used. A layer 7 load balancer trades off the raw performance benefits of layer 4 load balancing for the simplicity of having a single HTTP name (such as mail. Layer 7 load balancers understand the HTTP path being accessed (such as /owa, /Microsoft- Server- Active. Sync, /mapi) and can then direct traffic only to working servers based on monitoring data. This means only a single IP address is required. Summary. In part of this series we’ve looked at how clients access Exchange 2. To this end, he seeks the Triforce, a magical relic giving the holder ultimate power. Currently, he already possesses a portion of the Triforce called the Triforce of Power, which gives him great strength but not enough to accomplish his ends, leading him to hunt the remaining Triforce pieces. He is also the physical personification of the Demon King Demise's hatred and is destined to reincarnate eternally if he is actually killed. Agahnim played the role of trusted advisor for a time, but soon he displayed his true colors and seized power for himself. After imprisoning the Seven Sages and Princess Zelda, Agahnim used his magic to break the seal which imprisoned Ganon in the Dark World. Agahnim was defeated by his own dark magic thanks to Link's quick thinking. Bellum feeds off the life energy of other beings and created the Phantom Guardians. With his powers he fed off the Ocean King's powers until he was too weak to fight. He also brought Link, Tetra and Linebeck to the World of the Ocean King when they boarded the Ghost Ship. He resided in the Temple of the Ocean King on Mercay Island where, after fully powering the Phantom Sword, Link went down to defeat him. However, Bellum is later able to fuse with the Ghost Ship which then Link has to defeat with the help of Linebeck and the S. S. Linebeck using its cannon. Although thought to be defeated, Bellum attaches itself unto Linebeck and turns him into the Phantom Guardian- like Bellumbeck which Link defeats to free the pirate and restore the Ocean King. Also known to Zelda as a twisted echo in the Four Swords manga, Dark Link is usually solid black with red eyes but is white with purple hair in the Four Swords manga plus. In general, Dark Link just copies Link's swordplay, but in some games he is able to use Link's full arsenal of weapons. He is formed in various ways between the games, though always involving some sort of magical summoning. When he first appears in The Adventure of Link, he is the final boss of the game, and was created by a mysterious wizard as a test for the Triforce of Courage. In Oracle of Ages, Shadow Links are summoned by the sorceress Veran during the final battle. These Shadow Links do not directly attack and quickly die from repeated sword blows, but they mimic Link's movements so as to impede his ability to target Veran herself. These Shadow Links are created by the Dark Temple's Dark Mirror, and one tricks Link into drawing the Four Sword from the Four Sword Shrine, which releases Vaati and splits Link into three clones. They plague the Links throughout the game by both directly attacking him, and impersonating him while they attack Hyrule's citizens, causing them to be suspicious and mistrusting of the Links. The Links eventually eradicate them in a final battle in which they destroy them while Zelda undoes the seal on the Dark Mirror and takes it into her possession. However, in the manga, Shadow Link destroys the mirror, and ultimately himself, to save the Links from Vaati. While Link is in Kakariko Village, a shadowy substance emerges from the well, grabs a child, and then manifests as Dark Link. It attacks Link and initially has the upper hand, due to Link's overall lack of skill, but Link eventually manages to hit it. At this point, it re- manifests riding a horse, and so Link and Epona engage it in a horse- battle and soon defeat it. His role in Ocarina of Time itself is merely as a sub- boss in the Water Temple. He copies almost all of Link's attacks and is hard to hit. When you hit Dark Link, he falls through the floor and pops back up behind Link, trying to slash at his back. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl as an enemy in one of the Event Matches, as well as an alternate costume for Link and Toon Link in Super Smash Bros. However his sword, which assumes the form of the arrogant Ghirahim, tries to track down Hylia's reincarnation Zelda so he can use her life force to restore Demise to his true form. Impressed to see a human like Link willing to stand up to him, Demise decides to battle him out of amusement. Mortally wounded as Link manages to restore Zelda's soul to her body, Demise's remains are sealed away within the Master Sword. However, Demise's final words speak of a new incarnation of his malice living on, alluding to Ganondorf and the bonds that tie him with Zelda and Link's descendants. He is encountered several times throughout the game, as he relentlessly pursues Zelda in order to revive his master Demise. Though he appears delicate and acts in a playful, flamboyant manner, Ghirahim is a cruel sadist with a dangerous short- fused temper. He arrogantly toys with Link in their first two battles, then reveals his full power in a final battle prior to Demise's release. With his mission accomplished, Ghirahim is revealed to be the spirit of Demise's sword, given life for the sole purpose of restoring his master to his original form. He returns to his sword form before being shattered during Demise's climactic battle with Link. Ghirahim may be considered the evil counterpart of Fi, as they are both sentient manifestations of swords, but on opposing sides. Majora's Mask was used by an ancient tribe in their hexing rituals but the mask brought misfortune and catastrophe, resulting in the ancient ones hiding it away in shadow. In Majora's Mask the Happy Mask Salesman finds the mask and, sensing the evil within it, keeps it for himself to prevent it from falling into evil hands, but the Skull Kid steals it and the mask possesses him to do evil things, ending with him attempting to use the Moon to destroy the World, with himself included. The Salesman asks Link to retrieve the mask. Melee, a trophy of Majora's Mask is given to the player after the complete Event Match: Trophy Tussle 3. The Trophy basically summarizes the plot of Majora's Mask. Brawl, a sticker of Skull Kid wearing Majora's Mask increases the player's attack power in the Subspace Emissary mode. Through the aid of his lackey Cole, who posed as a chancellor to the New Hyrulian royalty, Malladus manages to break free from his bonds and enter the souless body of Zelda. However, when Zelda gets her body back, Malladus is forced to devour Cole and turn him into a new demonic body for him to inhabit. Though the possession would not last long, Malladus intended to destroy everything before being rejected from Cole's body. However, Link and Zelda defeat Malladus with the Lokomo Sword. Having invaded the Wind Fish's dreams, the Nightmares lurk within the dungeons of Koholint Island to ensure that the Siren's Instruments are kept hidden away and that the Wind Fish never wakes, allowing them to conquer the island. As Link collects more of the instruments, the Nightmares begin to discourage him by claiming that should the Wind Fish awaken, Link himself will vanish with the island. It first attacks by transforming into various creatures from Link's past (Giant Bot, Agahnim, Moldorm, Ganon, and Lanmola), then transforms into a giant creature called Death. I and attempts to smash Link with its giant arms. After this final Nightmare is slain, Link awakens the Wind Fish and Koholint Island vanishes. He starts the game by kidnapping the Oracle Din, and takes her away to his castle and imprisons her in a giant crystal. Onox has two different forms: the first is a heavily armored knight and the second is a massive Dark Dragon. His first form's main method of attack is swinging his ball and chain weapon. In his dragon form, his main weapons are his massive claws and fire breath. In the end, both of his forms are defeated by Link.
